What’s all the Buzz about the Historical Center of Bogotá?!

Perfect imperfection

Every now and then, I have free time and I decide to go the historical center of Bogotá as it’s one of my favourite places to go alone and explore. Let me start by the kind disclaimer that everyone may not see it the way that I do, and that’s okay!

Nevertheless, as a foreigner from a country so different compared to the atmosphere that Bogotá provides, let me say that Trinidad and Tobago’s societal dynamic compared to Colombia is 100% different when it comes to urbanization.

If you take a quick stroll through the capital city of my country, the climate of our urbanization is more corporate and most of what you can feast your eyes upon, lies within consumerism. Bogotá’s historical center of its capital is by far, so different. Let’s just say that in my opinion, it’s a perfect mixture of art, talent and consumerism.

I am not kidding when I say that every corner of Bogotá’s famous “downtown” is adorned by art and expression, which manifests itself in so many forms. Sometimes you can see it in the diversity and talent of the countless street performers, or even in the intricate beauty of the artisanal products that overflow the streets. By the way, some things are so beautiful, it’s hard not to just ignore your budget and buy everything instead.

Another one of my favourite characteristics is the street art and graffiti. The graffiti in the center is truly remarkable, each one telling a story of how the artist interprets the society, history and culture, communicating profound emotions and thoughts in several ways.

One last important thing is that when you are from a country which isn’t very populated, a very crowded street can have different impressions on you. For me, I feel very disguised among so many people, all running around for different purposes, wearing their different masks we wear for society. Sometimes, I identify strongly with everyone just ‘running’ towards their own respective purposes as crowded urbanization reminds me that we are all trying in life, and that we are not alone in our problems. All things considered, let’s say that “downtown” will always have a meaningful place in my heart.
